Dr Lorene H Stone

Kewpie ~ Rose O'Neill

Born and raised in Marshalltown, Iowa, Lorene Hemphill Stone graduated from Iowa

State University for her bachelor’s degree in 1975 and from Washington State

University for her graduate degrees in 1980. Her Ph.D. is in sociology which she taught

at the college level for 37 years. Lorene is a retired college professor and former dean

at Missouri State University. She has lived in Springfield, Missouri for 25 years. In her

retirement, Lorene enjoys volunteering, doll collecting, and travel with her partner, Gary.

Lorene has collected dolls for 45 years and has an extensive collection including

antique, vintage, and modern dolls. Her favorites are French bisque, character

compositions, and Kewpies (old and new). She has been a member of UFDC for a

decade, first as a member-at-large, and later as a charter member of the Springfield

Doll Study Club where she currently serves as President. Lorene also is the Vice

President of the Bonniebrook Historical Society. She can be found giving tours on

Thursdays at Bonniebrook – the home and art gallery of Rose O’Neill – considered by

many as a “hidden gem of the Ozarks.”

 Karen has been collecting dolls since she was a child. Her mother, an antique dealer, was able to coax her to go to estate sales and auctions, without too much kicking and screaming, in hopes that there might be a doll for her collection. In those early years she collected painted bisque immobile dolls from Japan. Her little Japan dolls are long gone, and in their place are antique dolls of all types and materials. Her Punch and Judy collection is one of her favorites.  It began while she was  living for several years in a village outside of London.  There Karen became fascinated with all things Punch and Judy. To Americans they are such unusual characters, certainly an acquired taste. Karen hopes that you enjoy the history, and examples, of this very mischievous character icon of England!
